Becoming Lana

"My mother told me I had a chameleon soul, no moral compass pointing due north, no fixed personality; just an inner indecisiveness that was as wide and as wavering as the ocean...Because I was born to be the other woman.Who belonged to no one, who belonged to everyone."

"Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful? Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul?"

"The boys, the girls, they all like Carmen."

"Oh what can I do? Life is beautiful but you don't have a clue. Sun and ocean blue, their magnificence, it don't make sense to you."

Lana Del Rey sings “they have no idea what it’s like to seek safety in other people.” In my efforts to become her for Halloween, I in perhaps in a different facet of what she meant, now understand. I am finding safety in other people: by becoming them. Transforming into Lana Del Rey (or perhaps anyone) allowed me to leave Amber and her troubles behind. Seeing myself in these photos shocks me - I look nothing like how I usually do, and it’s fascinating.

I had a total blast. I tried my best to emulate her style by browsing countless tumblr accounts dedicated to her, re-reading interviews, and looking through her editorials. Lana Del Rey’s style is very 1960’s, mixed with Latin America influences. Her signature nails, pouty lips and false lashes seemed easy enough, but trying to emulate her proved more of a challenge. I hope I was able to translate a little bit of her on to the camera.

Thank you so much to Ocean Bent for the photography, Liv Fashion Boutique for the clothing, and to Larry and Pam of The Gables Inn for letting us shoot in such a historic location! The Gables Inn, located right off the Petaluma Hill Road is spectacular. It is a registered historic landmark of Santa Rosa, and dates back to 1877! The barn where some of these shots were taken dates all the way back to 1850. Larry, one of the owners was kind enough to give us a tour of the Victorian property, complete with lavender garden. The Inn is also ranked #1 of the 5 inns in Santa Rosa, and was awarded a certificate of excellence by TripAdvisor.  If you are ever in the area, The Gables Inn is a must-stay!
