I Have Discovered Facial Muslin Cloths - And You Should Too

Several months ago REN Skincare sent me their Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask (it's totally a peel, but whatevs), and it's amazing. I love it. It leaves my skin soft and radiant, and it makes blackheads disappear. It takes my tired skin and in just 5-10 minutes leaves me looking like I just spent an afternoon at the spa. The mask/peel comes with a small muslin cloth to remove the product at the end of the treatment.

Then, last night, while testing out a triple masking method (exfoliate, purify, and moisturize), something just clicked: this muslin cloth is amazing. Much better than a traditional washcloth, and more friendly than a Clarisonic (why is it always demanding to be charged?), I decided to dive into some muslin cloth research.

Just as I suspected, these babies are awesome.

I reached out to REN to ask if they sold the facial muslin separately, which unfortunately they do not (but hope to in the future). After some online research, I personally purchased the Aurelia Probiotic Skincare Monday to Sunday Bamboo Muslins ($36) from Barney's. They come in an adorable self-storage box, as a set of 7 cloths, which means I'm able to use a fresh new linen every day. A major bonus is that these are made from sustainable bamboo, which naturally has antibacterial properties too! With all the traveling I have been doing lately, these have been such a no-brainer to pack.

➤If you'd like to try just one muslin cloth before committing to an entire set, try the Pai Exfoliating Organic Muslin Face Cloth for just $8.50.

➤If you'd like to jumpstart the process of having glowing, radiant skin, the REN Clean Skincare Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask comes highly recommended.

➤If you're sleepy and really into minimum effort and maximum results (because who isn't?) the DermaE Overnight Peel is a fantastic place to start.

3 reasons why you need facial muslin cloths

They provide gentle daily exfoliation
Have you noticed that your cotton washcloths (and favorite tee) become more stiff and brittle over time? This is because the cotton fibers are usually short threads, and treated with chemicals to make them softer; and the more the fabric is washed, the more it breaks down and becomes brittle. As the cloth becomes rough, we may be tempted to believe that we're getting a better exfoliation - but no! It's causing potential damage. Time to toss those terry washcloths, darlin!

The fibers in the muslin cloths are longer and have an open weave. Longer fibers mean less potential of becoming brittle (less fiber ends), which means a more safe and gentle exfoliation.

They're healthier for your skin
Traditional terry washcloths while soft to the touch can cause serious damage to the skin. They can cause tiny microscopic tears, which can lead to acne, infections, and premature aging. Plus, all those tiny little loops can hoard a terrifying amount of bacteria. No bueno.

They dry much faster than traditional washcloths
Bacteria thrives in damp and moist environments. A quicker drying time means less acne-causing bacteria which is always a plus in my book. My bathroom has some of the worst ventilation I have ever experienced, so I love that my muslin cloths dry quickly.

Bonus: They make great travel companions, as they dry quickly, and you won't have to worry about charging anything. Ever had an electric toothbrush or Clarisonic lose charge 3 days into a vacation? Kinda annoying. Muslin cloths dry quickly, usually under an hour depending on the climate. The Eve Lom set of 3 muslin cloths is perfect for traveling, as they come in their own pouch!
