Wine Painting with Elysia Meyers at Red Car Wine

This summer I had the unique experience of attending a wine painting class, at Red Car Wine. In case you're wondering yes - wine painting is exactly what it sounds like: painting with wine! The class led by wine artist Elysia Meyers, definitely makes the list of one of the more unique winery experiences I have had in a long time.

I love it when two art worlds "collide" and create a genre that is unique and beautiful. I have a college background in Fine Art and Art History, and naturally gravitate towards the heavier painting mediums, such as oils, encaustics, and acrylics. When painting with wine, the results are very similar to watercolor. Unlike watercolor however, the process of painting with wine is a little more forgiving.

From soil cultivation, to growing and tending to the grapes, down to the blending of varietals and so on, wine making is truly an art. Many wine enthusiasts delight in the color of a Pinot, a Zinfandel, etc. I love that Elysia Meyers took things one step further, and decided to place wine to paper, and create art with wine. Her wine art is absolutely beautiful, and to me, incredibly soothing to look at.

For the class, Elysia set up each attendee with four wines to paint with: Chardonnay, Rose, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Ranging from light to dark, she showed us how to blend and layer our wines to create gradients and shadows. What made the class extra fun was that we also had the same Red Car Wine varietals to sip on while painting!

A big thank you to Red Car Wine for hosting me for such a unique, and fun event. Elysia Meyers was patient and thorough in guiding us through the wine painting techniques, and I love how everyone's art turned out, including mine!
