Modern Dreaming in an Old Parliament: My Visit to K21

I wandered into K21, not knowing what I would find. What I discovered was a temple of the imaginative: a cathedral of light and shadow and modern dreaming.

Housed in a 19th-century former parliament building, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen Museumaka K21 (there is also a K20 location also in town) is large. It's spacious and invites curiosity and the desire to explore. The first impressions are...impressive.

From the outside, the K21 is a jewel amongst the greenery. Inside are arched windows and a domed glass ceiling which catches the daylight and spread shadows across the space. There is a hum of curiosity. The past and the present are in constant conversation here. The exhibits are sprawling and diverse: installations that play with perception, suspended sculptures, darkened rooms lit only by flickers of neon or film. Some pieces confused me. Some unsettled me. Every room felt like it was waiting for discovery.

At the end of my visit, my feet were tired but my mind was alert; mentally I was still moving through the spaces I had just left. I found myself seeking a quiet green space to process and contemplate (which the immediate areas around the museum provide). Seated on a bench outside I found myself thinking about how good it feels to travel alone sometimes — to give yourself the luxury of pacing your own exploration.

A few practical notes for fellow wanderers:
The restrooms are easy to find (thankfully), and the docents are gracious without being intrusive. I did feel a bit watched downstairs, however I was the only guest on the floor at the time, and it felt more like curiosity than surveillance. Also, K21 offers free lockers for your belongings, which is such a thoughtful touch. A small detail, but one that makes you feel cared for. Another sweet touch is your K21 ticket will also cover your admission to K20, which is on the other side of town.

If you’re in Düsseldorf, don’t miss this museum. K21 reminded me that art doesn’t always explain itself — sometimes it just needs to be.

(And sometimes, so do we.)
