It’s no secret that I love a good wardrobe staple. I’ve been known to wax borderline poetic about a plain white tee and the perfect pair of dark skinny jeans. Wardrobe essentials are just that: the foundation on which we build our closets. That's why this post is going to celebrate the less conventional "essentials" that follow some of the season's most wearable trends. Below I've chosen several of my favorite pieces that can be seamlessly added to any closet, and are universally flattering to wear; which definitely makes for a summer wardrobe essential in my book.
Gladiators, wedges, and flatforms have nothing on this season's blast from the footwear past. The mule has gained mainstream popularity once again, and this silhouette, as Refinery29 so aptly points out, looks fancy while actually being very wearable and versatile. I also really like the idea of choosing a bold hue, especially because it would look great paired with all of your neutrals, and even with other summery colors.
2. Cross-Body Bag
A functional and fashionable handbag is an essential that Lyst's editors can get behind, and the cross-body style is a tried and true closet staple. But rather than spring for another version in goes-with-everything black, choose something lighter and brighter to mix things up a bit. If you still want the versatility of a neutral, try out a cream or white cross-body bag. And if you prefer to go for the bold, follow this season's vibrant purse trend and choose something in a happy hue that will make your outfit pop.
3. Cold Shoulder Top
If the cold-shoulder style top got any hotter, it would be on fire! The trend is sexy and playful without showing too much skin, which means you can wear the style with ease, and for a number of occasions. The cutout and off-the-shoulder styles that are so popular this summer would look great paired with jeans, shorts, or skirts, and even those new colorful mules.
4. Light Denim + Colored Jeans
When stocking up on the typical essentials, jeans are normally on that list. However, when I think of a wardrobe basics collection, dark washes are what usually come to mind because they can easily go from day to night. In this instance though, I would recommend changing things up a bit by introducing a pair of light wash or colored jeans to your summer arsenal. The colored denim is fresher, summery, and will give your colorful pairings a completely new look.
5. Printed Mini Dress
Glamour's fashion team is loving a printed mini for summer, and so am l. Don't be alarmed by the idea of a short dress, because a mini can still look sexy and stylish in a very grown-up way. Balance out a shorter hemline by keeping it conservative in other areas—think high necklines and wider straps—for a classy summertime look. Pair your mini with combat boots, flatforms, mules, gladiators, sneakers, and just about any other cute shoes you can think of.
So there you have it! A fresh take on summer essentials to spice up your wardrobe. Basics don't have to be boring – they can be bright, playful, and fun while still being perfectly on trend. Which of these trends are you hoping to try this summer? Let me know in the comments below!
